How to Change Your Medicare Advantage Plan—New This Year.

January was a busy time at our office.

It was a time when people who had been manipulated into changing their Medicare Advantage coverage found out they had been duped.

This was usually done through unethical agents or other direct marketing.

When the time came to use their new coverage, usually January, they found that their new insurance was not what it was made out to be.

With no one to turn to, they came to me—their doctor

My staff and I had to learn every trick in the book to get things fixed.

Starting this year, things are getting a little better.

Typically, you can only enroll in a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage during the open enrollment period in the fall of each year.

However, You can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan into another or back to traditional Medicare during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP).

The MA OEP occurs each year from January 1 through March 31.

Changes made during this period take effect the first of the month following the month you enroll. For example, if you switch to a new Medicare Advantage Plan in February, your new coverage begins March 1.
